MOTORISTS who drink and drive have been warned: we are watching you.

Over the festive holiday period, Fenland District Council's CCTV team make it one of their top priorities to target drink-driving. They will report anyone suspected of being over the legal alcohol limit directly to the police for immediate response.

The CCTV warning reinforces the annual campaign mounted by the police over the Christmas and New Year holiday.

Driving while over the alcohol limit or being unfit through drink can result in three months' imprisonment plus a fine of up to 2,500 and a driving ban.

The campaign also stresses the dangers of driving the day after a heavy drinking session. Police say: "On the morning after you've been out drinking you may still be affected. You could feel fine but in reality be unfit to drive or be over the legal alcohol limit. Showering, drinking coffee or other ways of sobering up will not help.

"It is impossible to get rid of alcohol from your body other than through time. You could still lose your licence if you drive the day after your party."

Cllr Ken Mayor, portfolio holder with responsibility for safer communities, said: "Our CCTV staff are very aware that people tend to drink more at this time of year and of the extra dangers that poses on Fenland's roads. So they will be paying particular attention to this over the holiday."

During 2009, the CCTV team has observed and reported nearly 80 cases of drink-driving and 26 people have been arrested after failing a police breath test.
