Calls from a “vigilant” Whittlesey resident led to an arrest and the recovery of five out of eight high-value vehicles that were stolen near Wisbech.

During the early hours of Sunday December 4, a burglary was discovered at Shire Builders, Brigstock Road, in the north of Wisbech.

A police spokesman said: “On Monday, a member of the public in Whittlesey called us at about 11am to say at about 3am that morning they’d seen three trucks drive down their road without their lights on, thought it was a bit suspicious but didn’t call it in straight away.

“They were still there at about 11am so they reported it to police. Officers went down there and recovered one vehicle in Victory Avenue, another in Feldale Place and a third in Crescent Road.

“A 22-year-old man from Wisbech was arrested in Victory Road on suspicion of burglary and theft. He has been bailed to return to the Police Investigation Centre in King’s Lynn on January 17.

“Following the arrest officers found a piece of paper which had two Peterborough addresses on it. Whilst attending these locations, Southfields and Rayner Avenue, two more of the stolen vehicles were recovered.

“Without the call from a vigilant member of the public it is likely that we would not have been able to recover these vehicles so quickly.”

Three vehicles remain to be outstanding.

Police are appealing to members of the public in the Fenland area to be on the lookout for suspicious activity regarding commercial vehicles in their area.

Anyone with information about the burglary should call police on 101 and quote the reference number CF0562721216.
