A BUS company has vowed to give refunds to anyone it has accidentally overcharged after an input error saw customers from Leverington to Wisbech charged an extra 65p.

Long Sutton-based Cavalier Travel had programmed into its computers to charge £2.50 for a return journey from Leverington to Wisbech town centre, when it should actually charge £1.85.

But, after the company was alerted to the error by a complaint from a passenger, Cavalier director Dennis Upton said the problem had been rectified.

"It was a genuine error when putting lots of numbers into our computer and we admit to the mistake," he said.

The fare changes on the 384 Service which runs from Long Sutton to Wisbech town centre, calling at Tydd St Mary, Tydd St Giles and Leverington, came into force on April 22. A trip from Leverington to the town centre increased from £1.65 to £1.85.

Mr Upton said: "We put the new fares into a computer, which programmes the ticket machines, and that tells the bus driver how much to charge.

"But, as a result of an error, it was coming up as £2.50 when it should have been £1.85."

The service is also used every morning by students on their way to Marshland High School, in West Walton.

Lyn Johnson, whose son catches the bus from Leverington, said: "There were notices on the bus that said the price would rise, but it varied from £1.85 to £2.50 and some students did not have enough money to pay the fare because of it.
