A bus company has apologised for the alleged behaviour of one of its drivers after he was reported to have shown a lack of concern for his passengers following a crash.

At about 2.35pm on July 22, the First X1 service from Wisbech to King’s Lynn collided with a truck at the Horsefair roundabout, sending elderly passengers on the top deck flying.

One of the passengers, Richard Felton, claims the driver did not check the passengers were ok.

He said: “The bus was leaving the bus station on the Horsefair roundabout when it hit a truck sending passengers flying forward, some even fell to the floor.

“There was a total disregard from the driver who did not check to see if any of his passengers were ok.

“I was on the top deck and took it upon myself to make sure everyone on the top deck was ok - most of them were elderly and not seriously hurt and I was there to help those who had gone to the ground.

“I then went further and helped them get off the bus and onto the next one safely and before we departed. I am disgusted that the driver did not check on his passengers.”

Mr Felton e-mailed First to complain about the conduct of the driver. In their response, First said they were investigating the matter and would deal with the driver “appropriately”.

Stacey Burnett said: “I am sorry to hear of the incident you were involved in. We have been made aware of this by other passengers as well.

“The driver has been identified and is being investigated by the depot manager. We have advised any passengers that were injured to keep us informed of their injuries and progress and offered to cover the taxi fares of any passengers that needed to go to the doctors.

“I would like to sincerely apologise for any distress that may have been caused as we would certainly not expect our driver to behave in the way that has been reported.

“I would also like to assure you that this incident and the driver will be dealt with appropriately as the situation demands.”
