A BURGLAR stole a set of car keys from Elgoods Brewery in Wisbech and then crashed the vehicle in the company car park.

Lukasz Klimczak took the keys from the desk of head brewer Alan Pateman, and after he got behind the wheel of the Vauxhall Zafira, he rammed it into a wall.

"He then reversed back into the middle of the car park, where smoke was seen coming from the bonnet," prosecutor David Myles told Fenland magistrates.

"Staff realised the car had been wrongly moved, and they pursued the defendant, who abandoned the car and ran off.

"As he ran away, he picked up a bottle of milk from the doorstep of the HSBC bank, and was apprehended a short distance away."

Klimczak, 24, of Miletree Lane, Wisbech, admitted burgling an office at Elgoods Brewery on November 14 last year, and stealing the car keys.

He further admitted taking the car without the owner's consent and causing damage to it, and stealing the milk.

On the day of the incident, the head brewer had arrived at Elgoods early, he parked his car and left the keys on his desk, explained Mr Myles.

Shortly afterwards, CCTV picked up Klimczak, showing him starting up the vehicle and driving it into the wall causing damage, and then reversing.

Solicitor Roger Glazebrook said Klimczak accepted the facts as outlined by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Magistrates warned Klimczak that the bench would consider all sentencing options, including custody. He was given unconditional bail until March 25.
