THERE will be no British and Fenland Skating Championships this weekend.

The sudden cold snap at the start of the week prompted hopes that the championships, which were last held in 1997, would be held at Welney, Whittlesey or Bury Fen.

But at a final inspection today it was deemed that the ice was not solid enough for competitive skating.

Chairman of Welney and District Skating Club Roger Giles said: "It's been so exciting to be out there skating at Welney this week and it's very disappointing for many people that we will not be able to go ahead with the championships.

"We will be carrying out some fun skating at Bury Fen from about 9am on Saturday and anyone that wants to join us will be most welcome and we arte happy to lend people skates."

Members of Welney and District Skating Club and local residents went out on the Welney Wash for fun skating on Tuesday.

It was the first time the wash has been used as an ice skating rink for 11 years.
