The teenager, who was walking down the passageway between Lynn Road and Trafford Road, was approached by a man who pushed him from behind at around 5.15pm.

Speaking in a foreign accent the offender said ‘give me the bag’ and proceeded to pull out what was believed to be a knife.

The robber attempted to steal the boy’s bag and stabbed at his back several times. Fortunately, though, the boy’s rucksack saved him from serious injury, although it was punctured along with a folder inside.

The victim, who sustained cuts and abrasions to his wrists as a result of the incident punched the attacker and kneed him in the groin, which enabled him to run off.

The offender is described as white, 6ft, wearing a black hooded top, dark scarf around his nose and gloves.

The victim’s mum said: “He’s a tall lad and was able to defend himself before running off. I doubt they will find whoever it was because he was wearing back trousers and hoodie and had a scarf over his mouth.

“It was all over very quickly and once Ben had knee’d him in the groin, he made a run for it.

“I think people should be warned to be more vigilant when out walking in the dark - it’s another good reason for the council not to cut street lighting”, she added.

Sergeant Alan Boughen said: “This was a particularly frightening incident which has left the victim in shock but thankfully not seriously injured.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Lynn Road at the time of the incident to get in touch.

“We have increased patrols in the area and ask people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.”

Anyone with any information should call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
