A PLEA has gone out to people in Fenland for ideas on how to make better use of Wisbech Castle.
Steve Barclay, Parliamentary Conservative candidate for NE Cambs, has won support from county council leader Jill Tuck for his campaign to see the castle better used.
"I would be pleased to hear from the community on how they would like to see properties, such as the castle used," said Cllr Tuck.
Mr Barclay, who will be attending a Wisbech tourism committee on Friday, questioned whether the current use of Wisbech Castle " for internal county council staff training is the best use of this historic site".
He said: "Wisbech Castle is a jewel in the heart of Wisbech. It is a historic house and has a wonderful walled garden which I do not think are being used to their full potential.
"At the moment the property is owned by the county council and is used primarily for staff training. The house also hosts around nine or so weddings a year which is not a great number.
"Could we not carry out staff training somewhere else in Wisbech rather than using a historic tourist attraction?
Mr Barclay said two suggestions had come forward already including a coffee shop but he was keen to hear more ideas.
"If cathedrals and other historic buildings can evolve and make more use of their attractions, surely we can achieve something here too and I do not believe this is insurmountable," he said.
Anyone with ideas for Wisbech Castle are asked to email Mr Barclay on email@example.com
