THE desperate mother of Liam Green made an impassioned plea to magistrates "I love him so much, I don't want him to stay on drugs and be in trouble," she said, refusing to allow him to have an electronic curfew linked to her home.

And after hearing conflicting reports of Green's drug use from his solicitor and the probation service, Fenland magistrates jailed him for five months.

Green, 23, of Storbeck Road, Wisbech, admitted missing drug tests that were part of his community order imposed in April for shop theft.

Solicitor Anita Waterman said Green, jailed in July for further theft, had been drug free since coming out of prison in August.

"This is the first time he has been drug free since he was 15 years old," she said, "he is maintaining a drug free lifestyle."

But probation officer Graeme Seddon said Green had told a probation officer just last month he was smoking crack.
