A mother fought back the tears when she told an inquest she could not understand how her son was three times the drink-drive limit when his motorbike crashed into a house.

Shaun Dewing, 44, was looking forward to life with a new partner and celebrating promotion at Carters Design in Saddlebow, near King’s Lynn, where he had worked for 20 years, his family said.

His mother Val Dewing told yesterday’s Norwich inquest: “I don’t know what happened. I’ve never known Shaun to drink and drive.”

Mr Dewing’s partner Tracey Howling said she had been with him from 1pm to 4pm on the day of the accident, and he had not been drinking with her and showed no signs of being drunk.

After she had left his home in Craske Lane, Terrington St Clement, Mr Dewing drove his motorbike to his friend, Martyn Kay’s house in Wiggenhall St Germans. Mr Kay said he had one bottle of Budweiser with them before leaving at about 5.30pm.

The inquest heard that on his way home, as he was overtaking a car in High Road, Saddlebow, the bike “stood up” and left the road.

It carried on across a field and through hedgerows before it crashed into the front of a house, at about 5.40pm. Mr Dewing was pronounced dead at the scene, on October 4 last year,

Norfolk Accident Rescue Services attended and the team tried for more than two hours to save Mr Dewing.

The cause of death was given as multiple injuries due to a motor vehicle collision.

He had 253 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, while the limit is 80 milligrammes

Crash investigator PC Lee Smart said the motorbike was travelling at about 70mph, and added that Mr Dewing’s alcohol consumption would have led to his “poor judgment” in overtaking on a bend. Norfolk coroner Jacqueline Lake’s conclusion was accidental death.

The hearing was told that it was unknown where Mr Dewing had consumed so much alcohol. Would you like to pay tribute to a loved one in the EDP? Email david.bale2@archant.co.uk
