FUNDS for a new pavilion in Tydd St Mary - the original was destroyed by fire -- were given a helping hand on Sunday by a gala day.

All the money raised will go to the village playing field committee to help with the payment of the new building, which was burnt down in an arson attack in 2003. It will cost in the region of £100,000.

A plant stall selling home-grown plants at the fete was sponsored by Barclays Bank, who promised to match the figure raised from the stall.

There was also a fancy dress competition for children, tombola, rodeo bull ride, welly wanging, bouncy castle, barbecue, beer tent and many games organised by the playing field committee.

- Fundraising for the pavilion will continue with the playing field committee's bands in the park concert on Saturday, August 26.
