Builders R G Carter complete first phase of £5.8m re development of Wisbech schools site

Builders R G Carter has completed the first phase of its £5.8million re-development of Nene Infant and Nursery School and Ramnoth Junior School, as they merge to one site to form Nene and Ramnoth Primary School in Wisbech.
The first phase involved demolishing an existing classroom on the Ramnoth School campus to make room for a two-storey extension incorporating 12 new classrooms, breakout spaces and restrooms.
The new classroom wing has now completed and is home to pupils aged 5- 11, with further pupils from the Nene Infants School campus, relocating to the existing classrooms on the Ramnoth campus by the end of the year.
Karen Crawley, executive principal at Nene and Ramnoth School, is delighted with the completion of the first phase of construction.
She said: “Our pupils, staff and parents have been excited by the development of our school and we look forward to phase 2 being completed later this year.”
Pete Williamson, project manager at R G Carter, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide the school with exceptional facilities that will serve the growing local population and will greatly benefit pupils for years to come.”
Pupils have engaged with the building work by designing health and safety posters on the hoarding, where R G Carter have also installed viewing panels and art walls. Additionally, the construction firm held an assembly with the demolition contractor, to educate students on the demolition methods.
Phase two of the scheme is under way with the demolition of the existing kitchen and dining room, making room for a new main hall with kitchen and dining facilities to be to be housed all under one roof, improving the circulation routes through the school. Outdoor spaces will also see enhancements to improve the wellbeing of pupils and teachers.
The three form entry will allow for up to 630 pupils to be accommodated in 12 new classrooms with six remaining from the original school.
Parking will be reconfigured and emphasis has been placed on creating play areas including a soft informal area to the south of the site and a new hard games area.
