A 300,000 scheme to improve roads in Fenland - by recycling parts of the old surface - will start next week.

The schemes, known as carriageway retread, will be carried out during the next month-and-a-half as part of Cambridgeshire County Council's drive to improve roads while reducing the impact on climate change and the environment.

The process reuses the existing road material combined with chips and emulsion to reconstruct the road surface; improving conditions for drivers.

This process means less raw material needs to be quarried and then transported across the country and on local roads to the roadworks.

Graham Mallott, Maintenance Area Manager for North and East Cambridgeshire, said: "This is a great way of resurfacing and improving the road while reducing our impact on the local and global environment.

"Once finished, these works should improve the surface and safety of these roads for all users."

Mr Mallott added: "Residents are being told with letters about the works and as long as the weather holds we should be able to complete these much-needed improvements as set out in the programme.

"We apologise for any delays and ask motorists to leave plenty of time for their journey."

Surface retread will be carried out on the following roads:

• C35 Long Drove, Elm - from north end of road for 1,570 metres. The work is programmed to start on August 17 and is expected to take six days to complete.
