A boxer has dedicated his return to the ring to a fan who became a friend and left a lasting impression.
With a record of 4-0-1, Wisbech middleweight Shaun Simpson will be fighting for the first time in 10 months at Ipswich’s Trinity Park tonight (Saturday September 26).
He has dedicated the bout to Tyler McNulty, a regular at Hero’s Gym in King’s Lynn, who died in August.
Mr Simpson said: "Over the years you came to gym chatted day in day out big smile on your face, lifted your weights, learned to box n even come watch me box three, four times, and I’ll never forget that support.
"You didn’t have to be there, but you were loud n proud, and that meant more than you probably ever realised."
"Boxing is a strange sport.
"You meet people along the way, some are fans, but some become friends, and some leave a mark on you without even knowing it.
"You were one of those people.
"I’ve decided that my next fight will be dedicated to you.
"I’ll walk into that ring carrying your name with me, and I’ll give it everything I’ve got to win."
Saturday’s fight marks Mr Simpson’s first appearance since his draw with Jack Swallow.
He has since changed management, moving from Steve Goodwin to Newark’s Carl Greaves.
Mr Greaves said: "With a consistent run of fights and wins there’s no reason why Shaun (Simpson) can’t fight for a Southern Area Title in the next year or so.
"I will be doing everything I can to get him the sort of fights he wants to be involved in."
Mr Simpson said: "I’ve sat down with Carl, and he feels that he can help me achieve what I’d like to in boxing.
"If I was to end up winning a Southern Area Title at least, that would be fantastic to have something to show for all the hard work that I’ve put in."
Mr Simpson also thanked his manager, trainer Mel Payne, former manager Steve Goodwin, sponsors, family, friends and everyone who has supported him.
