A council has revealed why a crematorium in Cambridgeshire was evacuated just weeks after it first opened to the public.
Firefighters from Ely and March were called to Lake View Bereavement Centre on Chatteris Road, in Mepal, at 9.52am on Friday (September 25).
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews arrived "to find smoke issuing from a building".
"They cleared the smoke using a positive pressure ventilation fan and left the building with the site management team," a spokesperson said.
East Cambridgeshire District Council has since confirmed the electric cremator is undergoing a "period of testing during the commissioning process".
The spokesperson added: "On Friday morning, one of these tests caused an increased level of smoke to be emitted," the local authority said in a statement.
"Two fire crews attended as a precaution.
"There was no fire or any damage caused, and the matter was resolved within an hour with no further actions to be taken."
They added: "We would like to assure residents that no public services were impacted during this testing process, and other services will continue as normal."
The county's newest crematorium opened its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by nearly 200 guests on September 10.
The £13million facility stands on the former Mepal Outdoor Centre, which lay derelict for years.
The project was funded by developer contributions, including Community Infrastructure Levy, rather than taxpayers.
