A man has been charged after allegedly making a false bomb report on a train in Cambridgeshire.

At around 11.45am on September 18, a man was on a service from Waterbeach to Cambridge North when he reportedly activated the train's alarm.

He is said to have claimed there was a bomb on board and, when the train arrived at Cambridge North, passengers evacuated.

The man was arrested on suspicion of communicating a bomb hoax and was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Just after midnight the following day on September 19, the same man was on a train at Redhill in Surrey.

He is accused of telling staff there was a bomb on board.

The train stopped at Earlswood, where it was evacuated and searched.

No item was found and the man was arrested again before being charged in connection with the incident.

Aaron Russell, 36, of no fixed address, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Guildford Magistrates' Court on October 12.

Detectives are urging those who overheard what the man said or who witnessed either incident to come forward.

Those with information are asked to contact the British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 405 of September 18.
