As soon as you walk into the historic Hippodrome, it feels like you’ve taken a step back in time.
This sense of nostalgia is extremely fitting considering we’re stood inside the only circus building left in the UK.
With this in mind, looking at photos from decades gone by has even more meaning.
After picking up affordably-priced light wands and popcorn for our two children, we take our seats.
Before long, the hosts of the Pulse show – Jack Jay and Johnny Mac – make their way out on to the stage to introduce themselves and the global cast.
Like a more unhinged Ant & Dec, the effortlessly-funny double act’s combination of slapstick humor and silly jokes means there’s something for adults and youngsters alike.
Onto the performances and it’s a show full of world-class talent: from UK aerial hoop artist Gemma Creasey to Mexican juggling master Eduardo Garcia, but if there’s one act that’s really going to leave your jaw on the floor it’s The Motorbike Globe Riders.
Entering a ball cage each show, the Argentinian stunt team really do risk their life, not that you’d know it as they make their synchronised laps of the confined space look easy.
For the heart-racing moments like this, and when watching UK-based DUO ELYSIAN on the aerial straps, the stalls up high give the best view.
That’s still not all, however, as there’s still the big finale to go: the legendary Water Spectacular which, aside from Las Vegas, you can only see in Great Yarmouth.
Quite an incredible accolade, and the performance by the Hippodrome Show Swimmers stands up to their American counterparts.
As the full troupe returns to take a bow and say farewell, there’s no denying that Pulse is one of the most impressive circuses in the country.
A traditional variety show with plenty of modern touches (including a futuristic robot and bubble master Agustin Viglione) there’s no wonder it’s still going strong after 106 years and counting.
Don’t let your visit end there, though, as there’s even the chance to tour the backstage museum which, without saying too much, is a treasure trove of iconic items.
