Celebrations have been held to mark the 90th anniversary of Cambridgeshire's oldest purpose-built library.
Rock Road Library, which first opened its doors in 1936, celebrated the milestone on Saturday, May 30.
The event, organised with the Friends of Rock Road Library, a local charitable group, brought together residents, library staff, users, and councillors to honour the library's enduring community service.
Attendees engaged in a range of activities such as bookmark designing, creative writing, story time and crafts, while a magician entertained the crowd.
There were also special sessions like 'Memories of Rock Road', led by the local studies librarian, and a visit from Dilly the Dinosaur, the library service's mascot.
A cake-cutting ceremony in the library garden was followed by a speech from councillor Alison Whelan, chair of the county council’s Communities, Social Mobility, and Inclusion Committee.
Opened in 1936, the library has seen the city evolve and different generations pass through its doors, while remaining a hub for reading, learning, and community connection.
In 1992, the library hosted Rev Christopher Awdry, one of the authors of the 'Thomas the Tank Engine' books, for a book signing event.
In December 2002, the library embraced the digital era by introducing public computers.
Last year, the library underwent significant refurbishment, which included restoring original features like the skylights and investing in improved furniture.
The library now welcomes over 2,000 visitors per month and issues approximately 33,000 books annually.
Alongside its core lending service, the library also hosts a range of activities and events, including story and rhyme time, writing club, textile club, and scrabble club.
Councillor Alison Whelan, commended the library's role in fostering community ties while James Berry, Friends of Rock Road Library treasurer, expressed pride in the library's continued service to the community.
The Friends of Rock Road Library have been supporting the library for many years through various contributions.
