A sinkhole was discovered in the middle of the road in a Fenland town on April 28.

The hole opened up at the Victoria Road junction with West Street in Wisbech, to the right of a manhole cover, according to police.

Posting on the Policing Fenland Facebook page, a spokesperson said: "Please be aware we have had a report of a sink hole at Victoria Road junction with West Street, Wisbech. We sent officers to "look" into it (sorry its a classic!)

"Cambridgeshire Highways are on route to deal. Please be aware there may be some road closures put in place due to where the hole is."

Images show officers had cordoned off the affected areas with traffic cones.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said: "We are aware of a sinkhole at the junction of Victoria Road and West Street in Wisbech.

"We're working closely with Cadent Gas and Anglian Water who have both been investigating potential damage to nearby pipework.

"We will make repairs as quickly as possible. In the meantime, for people's safety, barriers and three-way traffic lights will be in place."
