Cambridgeshire police say detectives have arrested a 69-year-old man on suspicion of murder relating to the death of Una Crown 11 years ago.

The suspect, from Wisbech, was arrested this morning (15 April) and remains in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station in Peterborough.

Family members and neighbours discovered Mrs Crown’s body in her bungalow in Magazine Lane, Wisbech, on Sunday January 13, 2013.

The 86-year-old had been seen alive two days beforehand (January 11) and had spoken to a friend over the phone at about 5pm on the Saturday - the day before her body was discovered by police.

But a post-mortem examination concluded Mrs Crown died from stab wounds to her neck and chest, a murder investigation was launched.

Mrs Crown's clothing had also been set alight, in an apparent attempt to disguise her injuries and destroy evidence, but the fire did not spread to the rest of the house.

The case has also previously been featured on BBC’s Crimewatch.

The show re-visited the case as recently as last year, with a £20,000 Crimestoppers reward issued for information.

“Last year we appealed for help on national television with a reconstruction of events.

“It is incredibly positive we were able to reach such a large audience, but we continue to seek opportunities for new lines of enquiry.”

In 2014, a fresh inquiry was launched into the murder of the former postmistress after glaring failings in the original investigation came to light.

It involved high-profile appeals and a new team of detectives.

It threw up new information, which resulted in the arrests of two men, aged 33 and 40, within weeks.

Neither was ever charged, nor was a 44-year-old man arrested in January 2015 or a 58-year-old who was arrested a month after the murder.

Police have not yet revealed if today's arrest is a new line of enquiry linked with any previous suspects.
