Science was very much the name of the game when a group of Wisbech students travelled to the University of Lincoln this week.

Workshops and seminars dedicated to the fields of biology (biomedicine, biomedical engineering, bioveterinary) and chemistry were all on offer for the Year 12 students at the Thomas Clarkson Academy.

They had the chance to experiment with heart-rate monitoring devices and the less-pleasant task of finding and identifying parasites in horse faecal matter.

Students also simulated the testing process for autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

Discovering how the breaking down of aspirin reveals the amount of the compound within a single tablet also proved a popular challenge.

Ryan Hall, careers officer at the academy, said: “The aim of the trip was to explore other pathways, aside from medicine, at university.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a really successful trip.”
