Plans to extend a historic riverside hotel have been given the go-ahead.

Fenland council has agreed planning permission for an eight-bed annex at the White Lion Hotel in Wisbech.

It will be built on part of what is currently the car park of the hotel, which stands on the South Brink beside the River Nene.

A planning statement said: "The White Lion is an important feature in Wisbech both in terms of its location on South Brink and in relation to its function as one of the only town centre hotels in the town.

"It has however suffered a period of reducing activity and viability, such that new investment is required.

"The inward investment is considered necessary to secure the long-term future of the White Lion as a Wisbech institution."

The hotel dates back to 1850. Wisbech Town Council supported the plans. Council officers said they would "yield public economic benefits" without harming the surrounding conservation area.
