A van has fallen into a sinkhole in Wisbech this afternoon.

Wisbech Town Cllr Sidney Imafidon first noticed the large hole in Lynn Road at 9.30am today.

Cllr Imafidon said the sinkhole is two foot long by one foot wide and at least 600mm deep.

He added: "As a local councillor and resident, public safety was an immediate concern.

Wisbech Standard:

"I initially attributed the sinkhole to the many rainy days we’ve had."

"I know this foot path quite well; I use it daily and regularly litter pick it.

"The Lithuanian community litterpicked this area last Sunday, and there was no sign of a sink hole then."

He added that the sinkhole exposed a grey clay pipe. However he is not sure if a sewage pipe or rainwater pipe.

Wisbech Standard:

Cllr Imafidon then saw a van stuck in the hole at 2.30pm this afternoon.

He said: "The hole is bigger than it was this morning, especially after the driver made several failed attempts to drive his van out of it.

"It didn’t help that the van is a front wheel drive van.

"His attempts just caused more damage to the sink hole and probably his front bumper."
