Students at a Wisbech school decided to spend a week collaboratively learning - with the theme being based around Macmillan and the support that they provide for families coping with Cancer.
Although it was a little bit of a squish, Beaupre’s Year 5 and 6 students kick-started their learning by spending the Monday researching Macmillan Cancer Support together and were able to produce information leaflets all about this charity.
Macmillan Coffee Morning
On Tuesday October 3, Beaupre opened it’s doors to welcome members of community to their Macmillan coffee morning.
The event was hosted by our Year 5 and 6 children with members of the school council from across the school in attendance.
Children were able to share their knowledge about Macmillan and the vital work that they do with visitors, as well as enoying cakes and biscuits and most importantly making lots of money for this crucial charity.
The school thanked all those who supported this event by attending, donating and purchasing cakes.
Staff bake off
Staff were invited to compete in a staff ‘bake off’ to see whose creation would be deemed a winner.
With 11 entries, it was a hard task for the judges who were Mrs Whyatt (school chef) and two Year 6 school councillors (Connie and Jack). Judging was based on both taste and presentation.
After much deliberation, Mrs Secker was deemed the winner, with Mrs Shinn achieving second place and Ms Nicolas coming a close third.
With entry fees and the selling of these cakes, the school was able to increase the amount that they could raise for Macmillan.
Guess the number of Colin the Caterpillar Faces
Guests at the coffee morning were given the opportunity to guess the number of Colin the Caterpillar faces on a poster for a suggested donation of £2.
There were many close estimates, however, the winner was James Stott (Junior) who correctly guessed with 121 faces.
He received a box of chocolates as a prize, which were kindly donated by Outwell Post Office.
Mile for Macmillan
Despite having to wait for the grass to dry - following the previous evening’s downpour - Years 5 and 6 completed a charity run for Macmillan.
With a £1 entry fee, the children ran, jogged or walked around the school field (six times) to raise even more money for Macmillan.
A well-deserved sit down was needed afterwards for most participants, however, there were one or two children who ran extra laps for fun.
Further collaborative learning opportunities
Further learning opportunities will be based around the genre diary entries, considering cancer survivors’ testimonials, as well as producing news report videos and newspaper articles about their thought-provoking week of learning.
This week, a representative from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn spoke to Years 5 and 6 to further embed their learning about and understanding of Cancer.
Fundraising efforts
A grand total of £320 was raised by Beaupre Community Primary School for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The school said a massive thank you to all who contributed towards this impressive charitable contribution.
