The footballing community is rallying round a six-year-old player as he battles cancer.

Hunter Martin, who plays for Wisbech St Mary Under-7s, was diagnosed with lymphoma two weeks ago.

Charlotte Davis, one of the club's volunteers, set up a GoFundMe page to support Hunter's family, which raised more than £10,000 within days.

"As a club we want to be able to support the Martin family in whatever they may need in this very challenging and heartbreaking journey ahead of them," she said.

Hunter's mother Tanya, 42, has had to mothball her seafood business to stay with her son in Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, where he is expected to spend the next six months.

His father Ryan, 41, who works as a sign fitter, is looking after Hunter's twin Casey, as well as his younger brother, who is 18 months old, and older one, 16, as well as working to pay the bills.

Mr Martin said Hunter was taken to hospital after complaining of stomach pains. Tests later revealed he had lymphoma.

He said his son was bearing up well as his treatment began at Addenbrooke's.

"I've been with him for the last couple of days," he said. "Even after all the treatment he's had, he's going: 'Daddy, Daddy, can we go out in the garden and play football."

Mr Martin, who manages the Under-7s side, also arranged for the team's game last weekend to be live streamed to Hunter in his hospital room.

"Wisbech St Mary Football Club have been amazing," he said. "We are so unbelievably grateful at how the community has come together and taken a big weight off our shoulders."

More than 500 donations have so far been received from football clubs across the region.

Gregg Marshall, who gave £175, posted: "All the very best little man in your fight. You’ve got this buddy, from all at Yaxley FC U11."

Mark Britton, who donated £155, said: "Keep fighting little man from Stamford Yellows U16’s."

Jamie Gosling added: "On behalf of Leverington Under 8 Oranges, get well soon. Cancer has no colours, one big football family."
