A women’s running club is looking for volunteers to support its activities in the Fens.

Let’s Run Girls is a free group which aims to inspire women to take up running regularly for their own physical and mental wellbeing.

It also encourages runners to welcome more women to the group and invests in training to help them become Run Leaders.

The initiative - which began as a small running group in Cambridge six years ago - has now received funding to expand into Wisbech and Whittlesey.

Jane Scanlon, one of the Cambridge Run Leaders, said: “It’s so rewarding being able to support other women get into running and each week hit new milestones.

“I remember how hard it was when I was a beginner and I love being able to reassure new beginners that it does get easier and they can do it.

“I feel my confidence has really grown since I started leading with the group too, I would never have been one to stand up in front of an audience but now I’m quite happy leading our group warm up.”

Let’s Run Girls meets in 13 different locations across Essex and Cambridgeshire, including Ely.

Jane also explained how stepping up as a Run Leader helped her stay accountable with her own running commitments.

She added: “Also from a very selfish perspective, leading with the group has kept my own activity levels up over the years.

“On days when I don’t really feel like going out for a run, I know there’s a group waiting for me and I always feel better for getting outside, seeing some friendly faces and having a chat and a run.”

Those who volunteer as a Run Leader in Wisbech and Whittlesey will support the launch of these groups.

Let’s Run Girls says it is “looking for local women who are passionate about supporting others to be active”.

It also assures potential recruits: “Let’s Run Girls is not about being able to run fast or far, it’s about being encouraging, supportive and never forgetting how you felt as a beginner yourself.”
