A Grade-II listed hotel which accommodated the homeless during lockdown has announced it has now permanently closed to the public.

The Rose and Crown Hotel which stands prominently on the Market Place in Wisbech will no longer offer rooms, food or drinks.

A post on its Facebook page said: “We regret to inform you that as of 4th November 2022, the hotel is permanently closed to the public.

“This includes the food and beverage departments, alongside the accommodation.

“We thank everyone who has supported us throughout the years and will miss seeing each and every one of you.”

Its website is no longer online and the landline listed for the business failed to connect.

A mobile number featured alongside an old job advertisement was answered, but the individual was unable to answer questions from the press.

“The hotel is now part of the chain HH Hotels and I can’t say anything without approval from the owners,” he said.

He did confirm the property was sold earlier this year.

In September, this publication revealed the Rose and Crown was on the market for £1.2m.

It was hired by Fenland District Council to accommodate the homeless throughout lockdown.

The hotel’s TripAdvisor listing explains it was reopened in June 2012 under new management and ‘after extensive refurbishment’.

It says: "We offer 26 beautifully styled rooms including superior suites, doubles and family rooms, and provide exceptional dining experiences, a beautiful wedding location and excellent conferencing facilities.

“Please be aware when visiting the hotel that there is no alcohol sold on the premises and evening meals are pre booked only. Our evening meals are served between 6pm and 9pm Monday to Saturday.”

For the past six years, it has been owned by Rajesh Sadana.
