FATHER-OF-TWO Terry Hall has pleaded for road safety action after a car careered through his front garden... for the FIFTH time.

Three men escaped unharmed from the latest crash, which happened on the corner of Overstone Road, in Coldham, last night.

But Mr Hall, who is a former chairman of Fenland Rural Road Safety Network, said cars have crashed into his garden five times in the last six years.

“The writing is on the wall here,” he said. “People wait on the corner for the bus and one of these days someone is going to get killed.

“I defy anybody to sit in my front garden on a Friday or Saturday night and feel safe. They belt round that corner. It’s like a race track.”

Mr Hall said his neighbours had also been blighted by cars coming off the road and many were reluctant to use their front gardens.

He said: “The crashes are just so frequent. There was one driver who was three times over the limit. She came off the road and snapped the electricity pylon in half - that cut off the village’s electricity.

“There was even a crash on Christmas day a few years ago. We had been out and we came back to find a big hole in the hedge.”

Splintered fencing and car parts were sent flying into Mr Hall’s garden in last night’s crash, which happened at about 7pm.

The 58-year-old, who is chairman of Coldham Residents Action Group, said: “I was upstairs and I heard the bang. They lost control, the car spun, went through the fence and flipped over.

“That fence was only a year old because it was put up the last time a car went through it.

“Something has got to be done because someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed.

“We lie in bed on a Friday and Saturday night, hear the squeal of brakes and just wait for the bangs.”

The corner has pink tarmac and a flashing 40mph sign, but Mr Hall insists that a 30mph limit and more traffic calming measures are needed.

He said: “Coldham has been neglected as far as traffic calming goes. Why do they have to wait until someone gets killed to spend a few grand?

“We are just waiting for the next accident all the time.”

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesman said: “We’ve not been made aware of this latest accident. We would urge Mr Hall to contact his Parish Council and secure their support for a speed limit reduction and more traffic calming.

“They could also ask the police to enforce the current speed limit. There is also a responsibility on drivers to be aware of the road conditions and drive accordingly.”

A police spokesman said: “We were called to reports that a black Peugeot 206 had left Overstone Road, Coldham, and crashed into a garden at 7.05pm yesterday (Wednesday).

“Ambulance attended and checked over the three occupants who did not suffer any injuries.”
