The Waterlees adventure playground is Wisbech welcomed around 500 youngsters and their families for a day of fun and activities as it celebrated national Play Day on Wednesday.

A huge range of activities included fun on a backwards bicycle, limbo and sports, a giant artwork, face painting, henna art and a bouncy castle.

The Play Day event adopted the theme Get out and Play! It was run in partnership with Community House and The Oasis Children’s Centre, and youngsters were invited to take part in a variety of activities and competitions.

County councillor Samantha Hoy, who represents Wisbech North, said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day, we had so many people there that we sold out of hot dogs and burgers.

“The children had great fun, they really loved the sand castle competition. We had all ages there, from toddlers to teens, and children from all nationalities played together, having fun.”

Cllr Hoy said a lot of parents brought their children along to take a look at the playground, and were greatly impressed with the facilities on offer.

“We thought last year’s Play Day event was great, but this year’s celebration included more activities, and was even better,” she added.

Refreshments were available throughout the day, and there was a car boot sale.

The Get out and Play! campaign is calling on everyone to help make sure that children and young people across the UK have the time, freedom and space to play outdoors. As well as promoting children’s right to play, the campaign is highlighting that outdoor play is crucial for children’s health, well-being and happiness.
