TOWN councillor Mark Petrou says he is “not happy at all” with police response times after four Chatteris men - including his nephew - were attacked by a cricket bat wielding gang.

Mr Petrou said the four were walking down Chatteris High Street on Saturday night when they were set on by a gang of about 15 “all prepared for it, with missiles, weapons, cricket bats and anything they could find”.

He said: “The lads had no option other than to run. My nephew was badly busted up. “One lad was bleeding out of his ears. It was a sorry state of affairs.”

Mr Petrou said the four finally escaped into New Road and by knocking on the first door they found with a light on to ask for help.

He said he would be raising the issue of both police and ambulance response times with his fellow councillors.

“It is not what you would expect to see in Chatteris,” he said. “I am just hoping the police have caught much of it on CCTV.”

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman described the incident as a “fight which began in a takeaway before continuing on a street in Chatteris.

“The incident happened between midnight and 1am on Sunday in New Road, starting in Chilli Masters.

“The victim, a 26-year-old man, tried to intervene in a confrontation between his friend and another man, but got punched several times and fell to the floor.

“He then left the premises but he and another friend, aged 26, were attacked again in New Road, knocked to the ground and struck with what is believed to be a cricket bat.”

The spokesman added: “Neither of the men was seriously hurt in the incident.”

One of the attackers is described as white, 16 to 20, slim, six foot, and had short light brown hair.

DC James Bennett, who is investigating, said: “We are treating this incident as a violent disorder and it is lucky that no one was seriously hurt.

“I would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened or has any information about the attackers.”

Anyone with information should call DC Bennett on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
