CHILDREN from the Waterlees area in Wisbech gleefully embraced the spirit of the Olympics last week. But the serious business of London 2012 was replaced by good, old-fashioned fun in the sun.
Never mind the 100 metres, the marathon and all the other features of the modern Games. Instead, the youngsters competed in skipping, egg’n’spoon and three-legged races, plus others involving bean bags, rolling hoops and an obstacle course.
The weather was perfect for the event, which was held at Lime Avenue and the Community House garden to kick off the summer holidays and get everyone in the mood for the Olympics.
It was organised by Roddons housing association and Fenland District Council, supported by the Oasis community centre, Drinksense and health trainers from Mytime Active.
Other games included quoits and hook-a-duck. There was also a popular arts and crafts stall and face-painting by Wendy Bennett from March. A barbecue was provided by staff from Community House.
The day was rounded off with a five-a-side football match.
