MORE than 200 drivers were caught speeding during a week-long crackdown in Cambridgeshire.

Police issued 214 drivers with 60 fines for speeding during the initiative, which took place from August 20-26. Of these, 84 were issued in the Huntingdonshire, Fenland and Peterborough areas, with 130 offences taking place in Cambridge city, South and East Cambridgeshire.

Officers handed out 61 tickets for speeding in a 30mph zone, four tickets in a 40mph zone, 60 in a 50mph zone and 76 on a national speed limit or dual carriageway road. There were seven tickets issued on a motorway and six for travelling above the limit for a specific class of vehicle.

The crackdown was part of a campaign across Europe organised by the Traffic Information System Police (TISPOL).

Casualty reduction officer PC Steve Gedny said: “It is shocking to see there are still a number of drivers who think it is acceptable to speed on the county’s roads.

“Excessive speeding and inappropriate speed are the main contributions to avoidable collisions that result in death or serious injury.

“Those who break the speed limit are not only putting themselves at risk but also the lives of others.

“We will continue to work to make the county’s roads safer for everyone who uses them.”
