MORE than 3,000 people have now backed the campaign to get justice for Wisbech crash victim Jamie Butcher - and his family have vowed to fight on.

Jamie, 22, was mown down and killed on a pedestrian crossing in Churchill Road in February 2011.

Driver Michael Moore, of Murrow Lane, Parson Drove, was doing almost twice the speed limit and had run a red light. He hit Jamie with such force that his body was found 44m from the crossing. Moore was jailed for just 43 months in April.

Since that sentence, Jamie’s mother Tina, sister Hollie and stepfather Steve Green have joined forces with The Wisbech Standard and MP Steve Barclay to demand tougher punishments for dangerous and killer drivers.

About 3,000 people have signed the online petition but hundreds more have signed paper copies, with Jamie’s family continuing to campaign across Wisbech.

Mr Green said: “Last month the Co-operative in the Horsefair Shopping Centre let us in store to gain support for our petition and we had 720 people sign up over a weekend.

“Lots of people were encouraging us to carry on with the campaign and several people shared their own stories of losing people on the roads.

“The local support is fantastic, but to get the numbers up I think we will have to somehow get support nationally this year.”

Jamie’s family appeared alongside Mr Barclay on ITV’s Daybreak in October as shocking statistics on inadequate sentences for killer drivers hit the national press.

The Justice for Jamie campaign, first launched in The Wisbech Standard in July, has won cross-party support from MPs and has been backed by road safety charity Brake.
