TWO men have been seriously injured after a council dustcart ploughed into the back of a parked lorry in March this morning.
Firefighters, police, the air ambulance and Magpas Helimedix were called to Hostmoor Avenue after the collision, which happened at about 6.30am.
Three men were trapped in the Fenland District Council dustcart and had to be freed by firefighters.
One man, thought to be in his 40s, suffered serious leg and pelvic injuries while a second man, thought to be in his 30s, suffered a broken leg.
An ambulance service spokesman said: “Emergency crews did brilliantly to extract and stabilise the casualties as quickly as they did.
“One casualty suffered major trauma after being trapped inside the dustcart and was transported to Addenbrooke’s where he remains in a critical condition.
“The second casualty suffered a broken leg and was conveyed to Peterborough City Hospital.”
The driver of the second vehicle, which was parked, was unharmed.
A council spokesman said: “An accident involving one of our refuse drivers and two of our refuse loaders happened this morning at about 6.30am on Hostmoor Avenue in March.
“The refuse freighter hit the rear of a parked lorry. The police, fire and ambulance services were all in attendance, including the air ambulance.
“Two members of staff have suffered serious injuries and have been taken to Addenbrooke’s and Peterborough hospitals. The third man was not seriously injured.
“Our service teams were quickly on the scene to assist the emergency services, and the police are undertaking an accident investigation.
“Naturally we have notified the families and will be doing everything we can to provide them and the two members of staff with all possible support and assistance.”
Five ambulances, including those from the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), attended the incident as well as three fire crews and a rescue vehicle from Dogsthorpe.
Police set up temporary diversions and urged motorists to avoid the area.
