CHILDREN at a Wisbech primary school gained a fascinating insight into a different culture when a Chinese troupe paid them a visit.
Members of the West Norfolk and District Chinese Association captivated St Peter’s Church of England Junior School’s 250 pupils with the sounds and sights of Chinese New Year.
They were demonstarted Tai Chi and volunteers, including teacher Dawn Freeburn, had a go in the giant lion costume and bounded around to the raucous sounds of beating drums.
Jayne Hill, senior teacher at the school, said: “We try and teach the children about different cultures.
“It makes it much more meaningful when the children are researching about Chinese New Year for them to experience it.”
The troupe previously visited the school last summer when Year Three was learning about dragons.
Mrs Hill said occasions like these help bring subjects to life for the children.
She said: “We try and arrange as many practical experiences for the children as possible.
“Year Four was recently paid a visit by a design and technology expert who showed them how to build a Viking longboat.
“The children really enjoy learning this way.”
