MP STEVE Barclay said today he was confident Fenland would get a share of new Government funding of £3m to stamp out rogue landlords.
“Fenland is now in a great position to bid for this money,” said the MP for NE Cambs.
He said senior council officers had been to Westminster to explain to ministers first hand the problems of rogue landlords.
“I hope we can now secure this funding and continue our continued crackdown,” said Mr Barclay. “A message needs to go out to those profiting illegally that the game is up”.
Housing minister Mark Prisk has recently invited councils to bid for a share of the £3m pot – up by £400,000 on the money made available last year.
“Last year this taskforce allocated £2.6 million to local authorities to take on criminal landlords who trap vulnerable tenants in cramped and dangerous accommodation yet Fenland failed to make any bid,” said the MP.
He said Operation Pheasant, launched after he had won support from Home Secretary Theresa May, has found hundreds of over-crowded houses in the Fenland area.
