A FENLAND student has seen off competition from more than 52,000 youngsters nationwide to reach the final of a national foreign languages spelling competition.

Wisbech Grammar School pupil Charlotte Brett, 12, has sailed through to the final of the German section of the Routes into Languages Foreign Language Spelling Bee.

She triumphed in class, school and regional heats.

Monika Skinner, her German teacher, said: “She practices every day and retains the vocabulary really well.

“Her spelling is spot on and she has got a fantastic knowledge of the language.”

The national final takes place at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, next Friday.

Charlotte will attempt to correctly spell the most number of words in German in just 60 seconds.

Pupils have been given 200 words to memorise in their relevant language, which they will be tested on.
