Wisbech Town captain Alan Burton has his sights set on the top of the league after his side made easy work of March Town at Harecroft Road on Saturday.

They recorded an emphatic 125 run win over their Fenland rivals, who had won the previous two meetings between the sides at Wisbech’s home.

Wisbech remain fourth in the Tucker Gardner League but are only 17 points behind leaders Godmanchester Town.

Burton said: “It was good, especially after the 20/20 loss (to March two weeks ago) to come back strong. March are a good side but we outplayed them.”

Gary Freear made an explosive 82 and Josh Bowers chipped in with 44 as Wisbech scored an imposing 238-6.

Samuel Rippington bowled March opener David Hodson first ball and March never threatened as they were skittled out for 113.

It was an excellent team bowling effort - Rippington (2-27), Zak Brown (2-21) and Simon Freear (2-30) did the damage up front before Brad Apted (4-9) ripped through the tail.

Burton said: “Considering we had a responsibly slow start to the season where we didn’t hit the ground running, we are in a position where a win against a side above us would put us right near the top of the league.

“That is two wins in a row so we are coming into a bit of form.

“I don’t think any side is going to run away with the league this year.”

Wisbech expect to field an unchanged side when they travel to basement side Cambridge NCI on Saturday but Burton is not taking a win for granted.

He said: “It is good to field the same side because it helps us build consistency. Hopefully now we can go on a run.

“In this league anyone can beat anyone so we will not be taking Cambridge NCI for granted. We need to make sure we approach the game with the same attitude as we did against March.

“If we play the cricket we are capable of, we expect to win.”
