Police are urging builders and other workers to be vigilant following a series of thefts from vans across Cambridgeshire.

Eight thefts took place in one night – three in Peterborough, two in Cambridge and single offences in Girton, Hardwick and Earith.

Most were from work vans and power tools were stolen worth hundreds of pounds.

In July, there were a total of 39 offences. The vans are being targeted at night, mostly on the road or in hotel car parks.

Officers are keeping an open mind but believe some of the thefts may be linked.

Detective Inspector Dan Middleton said: “We are investigating all these offences and are committed to catching those responsible, however, we would urge anyone who uses a van to carry tools around for their work to take any precautions they can.

“I would ask them not to leave tools in their vans overnight and to ensure the vehicle is locked and secure whenever it is left. Ideally, vans should also be left in well-lit areas, if possible covered by CCTV or in busy areas.

“Anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour around car parks or around any vehicles should not hesitate to contact police.”

The nine offences on Wednesday night (July 30) were in Stretten Avenue, Cambridge; Histon Road, Cambridge; Cambridge Road, Girton; Meridian Close, Hardwick; Short Drove, Earith; Kinnears Walk, Orton Goldhay, Peterborough; Premier Inn, Hampton Centre, Peterborough; Hamilton Building Contractors, Orton Longueville.

Anyone with information about the thefts should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
