The future of a school for children with behavioural needs is up for discussion at a council committee meeting on Tuesday.

The multi-site County School was created in 2011 with learning bases in Cambridge, March and Huntingdon.

Its Fenland base, which has relocated to Coalwharf Road in Wisbech, could be converted into an academy. For this to happen, a sponsor needs to be found.

The Brooke Weston Trust, which runs Thomas Clarkson Academy, has been offered the option to take over the school, but it does not want sole responsibility over its running.

They would instead like Cambridgeshire County Council to find another organisation to run the Fenland Learning Base as an academy.

In a report, which will appear before the council’s children and young people committee on Tuesday, Adrian Loades, executive director: children, families and adult services, says: “The Fenland Behaviour and Attendance Improvement Partnership confirmed their desire to seek a sponsor for the learning base to convert to become an academy at a meeting in December.

“It has agreed to write a specification which will meet their needs.

“The local authority has contacted the Regional Schools Commissioners Office to seek a potential sponsoring body that might be willing to take on the Fenland Learning Base.

“It is a matter for the management committee of the County School to decide if academy status is to be sought.”
