A councillor’s election campaign turned to disaster when he tripped while out delivering leaflets and broke his foot.
Councillor Dave Patrick was out on his rounds in Fenland Road in Wisbech when he lost his footing and fell.
“I was going down someone’s gravel pathway and it was like ball bearings, I couldn’t get my balance, before I knew it I was down,” he said.
“I was in a lot of pain. I wanted to keep going but I just couldn’t, the pain was too much.
“Luckily the residents were very good. They offered me a cup of tea, they were really helpful and offered to take me to hospital.”
Cllr Patrick had other ideas, however, and asked for a lift to his car in Lerowe Road from where he then drove himself to the North Cambs Hospital.
His injured left foot - the clutch foot - held out - and after X-rays the medical team discovered he had a spiral fracture.
His foot is now in a cast which has to be looked at again tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King’s Lynn.
The break has tied in with a holiday to Portugal in two weeks time.
“Luckily I’ve been told I can still fly so all is not lost,” Cllr Patrick said.
“In the meantime I’m just hoping my family can help me out with the leaflets.”
