Advanced laser imagery will be used in Welland today as part of the investigation into the murder of six-year-old Rikki Neave.

Specialists from Bedfordshire Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Scientific Services Unit, in collaboration with technology firm Advanced Laser Imaging will be scanning the area of Redmile Walk, where Rikki lived, as part of work to plot sightings of him and establish his last movements.

This will provide officers with a virtual 3D image of the area.

Rikki was last seen leaving for school at around 9am on Monday, November 28, 1994. He is believed to have been wearing grey trousers, a white shirt, black shoes and a blue coat.

His body was found in a wooded area off Eye Road, close to Willoughby Court, the following day - five minutes’ walk from his house in the Welland Estate.

A post mortem examination concluded Rikki died as a result of compression of the neck – strangulation.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Wall, senior investigating officer, said: “Using specialists like the laser imaging is just one of the ways we are utilising the latest technology available to ensure we are in the best position possible to identify Rikki’s killer(s).

“We are in the process of building a timeline of Rikki’s last movements and with the help of the laser imagery we can clearly plot where Rikki may have been before he was murdered.

“We have spoken to a number of people since the investigation re-launched as well as going back to those witnesses who helped in the original enquiry. It is helping us to build a clearer picture of what Rikki did when he left his home on the morning of November 28, 1994.

“We are still keen to hear from anyone who has information about Rikki’s death and may not have made contact with police.”
