Wisbech is going for gold again in this year’s Anglia In Bloom competition with a colourful beach scene entry.
The town has won gold in the competition for seven years running and was also awarded a silver gilt at last year’s Britain In Bloom award.
This year’s ‘fantasy garden’ entry was created in the gardens of St Peter’s Church and aims to conjure up an image of what Wisbech – formerly known as Wisbeach – was like up until the first year of the competition.
It consists of sand represented by dune grass, the sea represented by blue and white petunias and an edging of silvery Artemesia to convey the idea of the surf crashing on to the sand, while there is a wooden beach hut at the back.
There is also a section of the display which consists of a variety of tropical plants, including flamboyant cannas and lush green banana plants.
Bob Ollier, Fenland District Council’s parks and open spaces manager, said: “Our fantasy gardens have always played a big part in Wisbech’s many successes in both Anglia In Bloom and Britain In Bloom.
“We’re hoping that this combination of past and present will also capture the imagination of the judges when they visit.”
Anglia In Bloom takes place throughout July with Wisbech’s entry being judged on Thursday, July 9.
