A pre school nursery that was warned by Ofsted it was putting children at risk by not making sure all staff had completed police checks has now been rated as good in all areas.

Wisbech St Mary Pre School, which was registered in 2000, was visited by inspectors four months ago when the setting was told it was inadequate because “children are placed at risk of harm as not all members of staff who come into regular contact with children have completed a Disclosure and Barring Service check.”

Also labelled “inadequate” were the effectiveness of leadership and management and the contribution of early years provision for the well being of children.

Just four months later, however, the setting has been re-inspected and handed a glowing report which says teaching is good and staff are good role models who form strong bonds with children.

“The staff and committee were thrilled to achieve a good outcome from their latest Ofsted inspection,” said acting manager Helen Wilson.

“It was a lot of hard work, and could not have been achieved without the support of all the dedicated and professional staff.

“Parents speak highly of the staff and the progress children have made since starting at the pre-school. They appreciate how well staff get to know children and how, by attending pre-school, children are now enthusiastic and keen to learn.”

Inspector Jacqueline Baker said the management team had worked hard to make improvements and now had robust recruitment in place including background checks on staff.

She said: “The management team has embraced the support from the local authority advisors and colleagues from other local early years provisions.

“This has proved to be invaluable in addressing actions and recommendations raised previously and also in identifying for themselves improvement priorities to benefit all children.

“Children’s behaviour is good because, when appropriate, staff offer gentle reminders to help children understand right from wrong.

“Staff support children with plenty of praise and encouragement which boosts children’s self esteem.”
