This year marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of the March Brass Band and to mark the occasion they are celebrating with a special concert.

Originally known as March Railway Silver Band, it was composed mainly of railway workers. As the rail connection declined, to mark the millennium, the name was updated to March Brass 2000.

Under the baton of Nigel Sutterby, it goes from strength to strength, presenting concerts across Fenland. Young players are encouraged and given tuition and the benefit of experience from long established band members.

The youngest is William Jackson, aged 11, and the most senior, is Ivor Smith, 81, still blowing strong after 67 years continuous membership. His favourite piece is the 1812 Overture.

To mark this milestone of music, a well-known ‘top’ brass band has been invited to visit March, performing at a public concert, and passing on their knowledge to ‘our’ band.

The World Famous Brighouse and Rastrick Band will play in March on Saturday September 17. The venue is being finalised.

The visit will cost money and so to set the ball rolling the Rotary Club of March has donated £100, with the promise to assist in front of house duties when the concert takes place.
