MP Sarah Newton – the minister for vulnerability, safeguarding and countering extremism – is the principal speaker at a summit on modern day slavery in Wisbech today.
Ms Newton was a guest at the summit organised by NE Cambs MP Steve Barclay and chaired by the Bishop of Ely, the Rt Rev Stephen Conway.
Delegates attending include Anthony Steen of the Human Trafficking Foundation, police and crime commission Jason Ablewhite, Rod Lowson, senior manager in the modern slavery and trafficking department of the National Crime Agency, and Anne Read, territorial director of anti trafficking and modern slavery at the Salvation Army.
A Home Office spokesman described it as “an excellent opportunity to hear about modern slavery and the work that’s being done to tackle it both locally and nationally.
“It’s an issue that concerns us all and that’s particularly pressing in rural areas where seasonal farm workers or fruit pickers have been amongst the most vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation.”
Also attending was Jenny Hopkins, chief crown prosecutor for CPS East of England and the national violence against women and girls’ lead.
