The history of Fenland was explored and celebrated last weekend as much of Cambridgeshire celebrated the Heritage Weekend.
Organised by The National Trust, Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,500 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers -and the occasion was marked in Fenland by the opening of dozens of local landmarks.
In March, tours of churches - including St Peter’s and St Wendreda’s – were on offer, as well as a host of guided walks, sessions at the Library and an open day at the Railway Station.
In Wisbech, the general cemetery was toured, the Fenland Historic Building Conservation Fair and ‘Bring Your High Street Photos’ events were held at Wisbech & Fenland Museum and in Chatteris, the town’s museum opened its doors for a number of activities, including the unveiling of the Great Fire of Chatteris screen printed banner and Chatteris in Myth and Memory exhibition.
