The winners were announced today at a lunch in Bury St Edmunds.

Bob Ollier, chairman of Anglia in Bloom said: “This year standards have continued on from last year with excellent awards achieved.

“Outstanding community work, many resourceful projects and superb floriferous displays have all added to fantastic community “

Ironically the triumph comes as the future of Chatteris in Bloom is “in doubt” as organisers say they may have to close and “turn all assets over to the town council”.

Three committee members announced that they may not re-stand at a meeting on August 30 and an urgent appeal for volunteers has now been issued.

In a post on the group’s Facebook page, they say without more volunteers this year could be their last summer display.

The award-winning horticultural group scooped gold last year for their floral displays and have consistently won silver gilt for six years prior.

The post read: “Our AGM is held in October and tonight the issue of who would be prepared to re-stand for their position on committee was raised.

“Unfortunately, three key members are in doubt about their ability to continue. If Chatteris in Bloom is to continue, fresh people will be required to get involved.

“This will mean joining the committee, attending meetings and getting hands-on with all the work that is necessary around the town.

“It is a commitment not to be taken lightly, but with enough people involved, it can be easily achieved

“Without extra volunteers, this could well have been the VERY LAST summer display. More help is needed to make this happen year after year.

“We would welcome genuine interest, please message the page or alternatively, email: chatterisinbloom@live.co.uk If those members of committee do decide that continuing is untenable, and no one comes forward, there would be no option but to close the group down and turn all assets over to the town council as there would not be enough members to form the committee as per our constitution.

“When you go through town tomorrow and see all the hanging baskets, troughs and planters, please take a moment to think about how they got there & what it would look like without them.”

Chatteris in Bloom take part in the Anglia region of the Britain in Bloom neighbourhood competition that is run by The Royal Horticultural Society.
