A new Boat Watch Anti-Theft Outboard Cover Scheme has been developed for Cambridgeshire.
A new Boat Watch Anti-Theft Outboard Cover Scheme has been developed for Cambridgeshire and it has the backing from a number of bodies including - the Environment Agency, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Boat Watch, GOBA, Assoc of Nene River Clubs, Cambridge Marine Industries, and Cam Conservators.
The numbers of outboards stolen in the UK have been steadily rising in recent years. Some early attempts to address the problem have included permanently defacing of cowlings and the removal of outboards but with limited take up. The welding of stainless studs and the use of heavy duty outboard locks has proven effective; however the criminals are becoming increasingly ruthless and further deterrents are required.
How the Boat Watch Anti-Theft Outboard Cover Scheme works …
o Removing the hood instantly reduces the value of an outboard
o Hoods are expensive items to replace, starting at £100 for small outboards
o Attempting to replace the hood draws attention to the criminal
o Cambs Constabulary and Boat Watch branding are proven deterrents
o Covers are manufactured from high quality materials
o Drawstring enables quick fit , in under 1 minute
o Locking straps reduce casual vandalism
o Vents reduce condensation
Similar schemes have been successfully tried and tested by the Norfolk, Essex and Devon and Cornwall Police proving that this simple system works.
The Theft Reduction Cover should always be used in conjunction with existing security systems. Fitting a sturdy outboard lock and welding bolt studs are also effective deterrents. Though security always begins with knowing your equipment, it is vital you keep a record of the outboard serial numbers, permanent DNA or smart water marking is also advised.
The higher the take up along the River Great Ouse/Nene/Cam and Cambridgeshire area, the more effective the Boat Watch Anti-Theft Outboard Cover Scheme will be in reversing the recent rise in outboard theft in the area. All boat owners are being actively encouraged to take part in this scheme
