MEMBERS of Fenland Youth District Council paid tribute to the two young prize-winners at last night's highly-successful Youth Achievement Awards.
The council chamber at Fenland Hall in March was packed with nominated young people and their parents for the awards, run by Fenland District Council and the Cambs Times/Wisbech Standard.
Oliver Hutton, 15, from Leverington, was chosen as the overall winner and winner of the personal achievement award, one of two new awards for this year.
Youth councillors described Oliver as "someone who has achieved so much, even though they were bullied at school, with the determination to achieve and the strength from their family".
Oliver walked away with two trophies, three certificates and a cheque of 100 from the council.
Brett Holloway, 17, of Wimblington, won the second new award - for community contribution. He helps deliver coaching sessions at the village's Priory Golf Centre for adults with learning disabilities.
Youth councillors said Brett "was a wonderful advocate of how sports can help all sorts of young people to develop in so many ways".
Brett walked away with two certificates and a trophy.
All the trophies were presented by snooker star Joe Perry, on behalf of the Cambs Times/Wisbech Standard.
Each young person nominated received a certificate in recognition of their achievement, presented by Councillor Steve Garratt, the council's portfolio holder for children and young people.
Young people were nominated for charity work, volunteering efforts, sporting achievements and personal achievements.
There was also a special mention for a DVD made by six teenagers from Guyhirn, raising awareness of speeding through their village. The hard-hitting DVD was shown to the audience.
